Peter Wintersgill outlines the career of Giulietta Simionato, winner of the Bel Canto competition in Florence.

Adult life
Won Bel Canto Competition Florence 1933.
She sang at Milan from 1939, including Rossini's Rosina and Cinderella. She also sang at the first Edinburgh Festival in 1947. Covent Garden debut 1953, in mezzo roles opposite Callas.

U.S. debut Chicago 1954, New York Met from 1959. A coloratura mezzo, her voice had a wide range, she sang brilliantly in Rossini, Bellini & Donizetti roles.
She retired in 1966.
