Peter Wintersgill introduces us to Oda Slobodskaya, one of the leading interpreters of Russian songs of her time.

10th December 1888 in Vilnius, Russia.

Studied in St. Petersburg.

Adult life
Opera debut St. Petersburg 1918 as Lisa in Tchaikovsky's Queen of Spades. Paris debut 1922. Covent Garden debut 1932, sang there in Wagner, Delius & Mussorgsky. She appeared in operetta as Odali Careno. She also sang in the first London performance of Delius' Koanga in 1935. She created the role of Prasha in Stravinsky's Mavra 1922. A frequent broadcaster, she was the foremost interpreter of Russian song of her time.
She died 29th July 1970 in London aged 81.
