Peter Wintersgill outlines the career of Set Svanholm, regarded in his day as the leading Wagner tenor.

Initially a church organist.

Adult life
Studied Stockholm Conservatoire, then taught singing there. Studied singing with Forsell, debut 1930 as baritone. Tenor debut 1936. Sang mostly Wagner roles, in great demand as Siegfried and Tristan. Sang at Salzburg Featival 1938, Bayreuth 1942, New York Met 1946 56, Covent Garden 1948 57, often appeared with Flagstad. He sang Peter Grimes in the Stockholm premiere of Britten s opera. He was regarded as the world's leading Wagner tenor.

He died 4th. October 1964 in Stockholm aged 60.
