Open Features: Francesco Tamagno

Peter Wintersgill introduces us to the singer Francesco Tamagano who made his opera debut in 1873.

28th. December 1850 in Turin.

Studied Turin Conservatoire and sang in church in Turin in 1870.

Adult life
Opera debut 1873 in Donizetti's Polieto. Sang at La Scala from 1877. Toured South America 1880, then sang in Lisbon and Madrid. He created title role in Otello Milan 1887, his "trumpet tone" being ideally suited, also sang Riccardo in Un Ballo in Maschera, also Don Carlos and Radames in Aida. He also sang in London, Chicago and New York. A forceful actor, he brought vocal & dramatic excitement to all his performances.

He died 31st. August 1905 in Varese aged 54.
