Peter Wintersgill outlines the career of Milka Ternina, one of the greatest singers of her day.

19th. December 1863 in Vezisce, Croatia.

Adolescence
Studied in Zagreb and Vienna.

Adult life
Opera debut Zagreb 1882. Sang in opera at Leipzig (Elizabeth in Tannhauser), Graz, Bremen and Munich (Leonore in Fidelio). Covent Garden debut 1828 as Isolde, later as Brunnhilde. Sang Kundry in Parsifal Bayreuth 1899., same roles in Boston 1896, New York Met debut as Elisebeth. She was the first London Tosca in 1900, also at Met in 1901. American debut as Brunnhilde Boston Mass 1896. She was noted for a large warm voice, one of the greatest singers of her day. She retired in 1906.

She died 18th, May 1941 in Zagreb aged 71.
