Poetry Pleases: Perfect Day
John Ayling's poem records a day of perfect bliss.
Incredible this day to me has been
For you left me there without any fear,
As the autumn sun illuminated pastures green,
To town with Mary, friend most dear,
Before dining at the Prince Rupert Inn
A treat most rare, that filled you with delight
Since you are bound to me by day and night.
All this I saw when you returned once more
With such happiness, your face all beaming,
To tell me of it coming through the door
Giving this book, which beyond all seeming,
I had desired – though I had not said so!
No present could have pleased me more than this
As in your heart, my love, you surely know
By all my thanks. A day of perfect bliss.
