Poetry Pleases: Anticipation

Ivor Murrell’s poem tells of the best buy of a lifetime.

“It’ll cost you a pound”
I reached forward to open the box
but was beaten by his boot
which jammed the lid.

“It’s a pound to open and own”
he revised, perched firmly on one leg.
The rough square wooden box
was partly covered with dull paper.

The old paper intrigued me,
it was thin, torn and neglected
but had once covered promise.
A sale or house clearance?

“It could be empty, but
it will cost you a pound to look.”
I paid the pound.
The best buy of my life.
