Open Features: Maggie Teyte

Peter Wintersgill introduces us to opera singer Maggie Teyte who was coached by Debussy.

17th. April 1888 in Wolverhampton.

Studied at R.C.M. and in Paris.

Adult life
Debut Monte Carlo 1907 as Tyrcis in Offenbach's Miriam et Daphne. Sang Melisande in Debussy's opera Paris 1908, coached by Debussy. American debut 1911 in Chicago in Cherubino., She has also appeared in musical plays. She sang Eva in Die Meistersinger in 1938. Her last operatic role was Belinda in Purcell's Dido and Aeneas London 1951 with Flagstad. She has recorded many French songs by Debussy, Faure etc. Created D.B.E. 1958.

She died 26th May 1976 in London aged 88
