Opera debut as Duke in Rigoletto Toronto 1954. Covent Garden debut 1957 as Riccardo in Un ballo in Maschera. Bayreuth debut 1958 as Sigmund, later as Parsifal 1964. Met debut 1960 as Canio in Pagliachi. La Scala debut 1960 as Florestan. Other notable roles include Otello, Peter Grimes, Samson (Saint-Saens and Handel) and Tristan.

With ringing tone and fine enunciation, he is one of the great heroic tenors of his time.
