North American Dreaming: Mama, Where Have You Gone?
William Burkholder’s poem spotlights the terrible ultimate consequence of addiction.
The ribbon wrapped piano,
Crayons drop one by one,
Rolling into the corridor,
Glass encased cocaine,
Burning on the keys,
The scent of addiction’s death,
Lingers,
The reaper's scarf worn,
Placed tightly around her neck,
Screams from the hall,
"Mama, Mama! Where have you gone?"
