U3A Writing: My Favourite Patch Of Earth

Paul Nicolias tells of the delight of walking his own land at day’s end.

At the end of the long hot days,
My dog Streaker and I go out
when the light is going down
to walk among the vines.
Streaker rockets past me
Raising a dog's high cloud of dust
In the long avenues of brown earth.
Jagged leaves of Walthams line one side
Fat sultanas on the other.
We lose ourselves in acres covered in vines.
This is our farm where golden sultanas grow.
The elements are the enemy we battle
dust storms, rain, hail, sun and winds
To produce the fruits of our labour.
