Open Features: Johann Vogl

Peter Wintersgill outlines the life of singer Johann Vogl, a friend of Schubert who wrote songs for him to sing.

10th. August 1768 in Ennsdorf, Austria.

Educated at a monastery.

Adult life
He sang at the Vienna Court Opera 1795-1822. excelling as Orestes in Iphigenie en Tauride. He met Schubert through Schober and became a close friend, singing many of his lieder, and having some dedicated to him. He sang in the premiere of his Zwillingsbruder in 1820. He also sang the Erlkonig in public in 1821, also in the premiere of the Wintereisse cycle in 1827.

He travelled with Schubert several times to Upper Austria. He died 19th November 1840 in Vienna aged 72.
