Ancient Feet: 41- The Proof's In The Pudding

...'We could divert and take in Grisedale Pike after Crag Hill and before we go on to Grasmoor,'Tom suggested 'but that would make it a very long day and I think we should leave it for another time.'

'Well I don't agree,' Andy demurred 'I think we should do them all in one foul sweep.'

'I think the expression is one fell swoop,' Paul murmured....

Alan Nolan continues his hilarious account of walking from one side of England to the other with a bunch of mates.

We walked on through the rain to Keswick and there was quite a pleasant surprise awaiting me as the youth hostel there was a big improvement on my first two hostelling experiences. We had our own dormitory with just the four bunk beds, and the bathroom facilities were much better, with plenty of shower cubicles. Also, the drying room was well set out and we mingled with all the other hostellers filling the drying room with wet clothes. At least they would be dry by morning.

After a much more comfortable night, we were preparing for breakfast when Andy came in complaining that our clothes were still wet as the heating had not been switched on in the drying room. He had already raised the matter with one of the assistant wardens at the reception desk whose response had been that he had not realised that anyone had wet clothes.

'As it rained all fuckin' day yesterday, it should have been fuckin' obvious that everyone would have wet clothes,' Andy had pointed out in his polite, understated way.

'Right,' said Tom, who had not been enjoying anything like as much confrontation as he would have wished, as he set off for the stairs. Unfortunately for him, by the time he reached reception, a senior warden was on duty and he was extremely sympathetic and apologetic so Tom felt that he could not give him the bollocking that he had intended for the assistant warden.

From Keswick, we were walking to Buttermere and would take in Causey Pike, Sail, Crag Hill, Grasmoor, Wandope and Whiteless Pike along the way.

'We could divert and take in Grisedale Pike after Crag Hill and before we go on to Grasmoor,'Tom suggested 'but that would make it a very long day and I think we should leave it for another time.'

'Well I don't agree,' Andy demurred 'I think we should do them all in one foul sweep.'

'I think the expression is one fell swoop,' Paul murmured.

'Whatever, in the final analogy, the proof's in the pudding.'

'I think you'll find the correct saying is the proof of the pudding is in the eating,' Paul said despairingly, not bothering to mention Andy's other misuse of the English language.
