Burn off those Christmas calories, or kick start your New Year’s resolution to get fit with a walk in the clear, crisp winter air. Get outdoors and join a winter walk in 2012 to discover new surroundings and stunning countryside, suggests Phil Harper.

The National Trust has loads of great places to visit throughout the early months of 2012, including some of the finest landscapes across England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Here’s a selection of the best guided walks on offer in early 2012:

Plas Newydd Country House and Gardens, Anglesey

Winter Walks, Saturdays and Sundays 11am-4pm

Blow away the cobwebs and enjoy an exhilarating winter walk through the winter splendour of the gardens and woodland areas of this country house, with stunning views across the Menai Straits to Snowdonia.

Park Walk, every Sunday 11.15am-1pm
