Feather's Miscellany: Summer Scene

John Waddington-Feather paints a word portrait of England in Summer.

The land waxes fat,
and deep the woodland pigeons
croat their calls;
swallows skim the trees
and higher still the shrieking swifts
sift out the air of flies;
the hedges buzz with scent,
with dog-rose and sweet honeysuckle;
and somewhere far away
a cuckoo sings her final song
before she flies away.
