U3A Writing: Burnt Village

John Leary's poem tells of great loss, and brings hint of hope.

Like wanton mongrel dogs in a flock of sheep
the fire attacked everything.
Those who feast on lists will enumerate our losses:
eleven people, thirty-one houses, three shops,
one pub, one school, one cop-shop
even the swimming pool.
Our Lady’s Church was especially tasty:
nothing remains but the marble christening font
where we will baptise our babies
when they come.
