U3A Writing: Sailing At Cullulluraine

It was not all plain sailing when Monica Duckering took to the water.

Sailing away across the lake
on a blue-sky day
was good.
A gentle breeze blew
ruffling shirts and hair,
then clouds appeared
hiding the sun.
And wind strengthened
pushing the boat faster,
farther from shore
rocking the flimsy craft
on choppy dark waves.

Fearful of being tipped
into heaving water
into its cold wet arms
was no longer good,
no longer safe.
No one laughed.

But we will go sailing again
another day
when we will have forgotten
our fright,
remembering only the joy
of that blue-sky day
with friends and laughter.
